The Occurrence

Having spent the last two months tucked neatly away at Simiman Sound to write, record and mix the follow up to our debut album we are pleased, nay proud, to announce that it is now complete (the music at least).

This very morning we coiled ourselves around the ‘stereo’ to absorb the mastering work of Andrea Marutti as he magically coaxed the finer points of our forthcoming EP from within the tatty waveforms of our final mixes. We, dear readers, are most pleased with the results.

Here are the very words we are using to describe this audio document:

In the autumn of 1974 a mysterious object fell to Earth. Its impact triggered a series of strange happenings that tore at the fabric of reality and pushed belief to its limit. ‘The Occurrence’, the new EP by Wizards Tell Lies, is the soundtrack to that event.

In the early hours of 17th September 1974 an unknown object crashed into Oak Nook Forest. Fascinated by the locals’ belief in time travel, anthropologist Ezra Parker, studying the area at the time, selflessly took it upon herself to investigate the occurrence and the alarming events that followed. Parker made extensive field recordings of the locale and they stand as a terrifying document to that day.

These unique recordings speak of Parker’s encounters – unnatural trees, strange tones with no source, the ominous creature known as The Shiverling, and the appearance of a Black Sun – all of which remain part of local legend. But despite her compelling audio evidence, some people still believe the events of 17th September were a hoax contrived by Parker to elevate her public and academic standing.

In May 2011, Wizards Tell Lies visited Oak Nook to make their own recordings of the forest for the follow up to their eponymous debut. These audio documents, alongside elements of Ezra Parker’s original recordings have been incorporated into the music of ‘The Occurrence’ on which Wizards Tell Lies create a sinister and dark soundtrack to an almost forgotten but forever disturbing incident.”

Thanks to Matt Chance for his guitar and mics; to Paul McIntyre for his endless support and word-smithery; to Andrea Marutti for his mastering prowess; to Stuart Tonge for the ceaseless opportunities and belief; to Ezra Parker for allowing us access to her knowledge and archives and to Steph and Lucas for their incredible love, support and encouragement.

The EP is set for a late Oct/ early November 2011 release via First Fold Records.

A sneak peak will appear soon…
